Intense monster/slasher-type scares frequent death, peril, and gore. He agreed with producers to incorporate it into the show, and his character is bullied by kids at school because of it. Actor Gaten Matarazzo has a genetic condition called cleidocranial dysostosis, which affects the development of bones and teeth. A supporting character belongs to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and, while the characters accept her religion and dispel the idea that Mormons wouldn't have "electricity and cars and stuff," one character flippantly describes them as "super-religious White people." Russians are largely portrayed as villains, though a couple are given more complex characterizations and act with kindness, such as Alexei. It's implied that a main character is gay off-screen, the actor confirms it. She has a crush on another girl throughout most of Season 4. Taking a risk for the Midwest in the 1980s, one character tells a good friend that she's a lesbian and is met with support. The main friend group is mostly White, but Black character Lucas' storyline does expand and deepen as time goes on, and his younger sister also sees more screen time in later seasons. In addition to Eleven, strong female characters like Max, Nancy, Joyce, and Robin are integral to the story, with both Nancy and Joyce developing more confidence and agency as the story develops. That was largely thanks to the presence of Vecna, who finally puts something of a human, eminently punchable face on Stranger Things’ creepy world of the Upside Down. I won’t ruin season four of Stranger Things for you if you haven’t seen it yet, but it was probably the best the show’s been to date. ![]() Listen, VR games don’t usually get my attention very often but even I think this looks intriguing. Tender Claws have worked on a few VR adventures before, but this horror game is their first big licensed outing. This will apparently involve invading the subconscious of familiar Stranger Things characters, along with battling humans and Upsidedownian monsters with your brain-throbbing telekinetic powers. You’ll shepherd Vecna as he explores the Upside Down, mucking about with the otherworldly, alien contents therein to start bringing his evil plans for revenge together. Stranger Things VR delves into earlier seasons of the show than just season four. I’m not sure exactly how involved they are, but the trailer is suitably Stranger Things enough that it’s not that big a deal if they just looked at it and went “Yes, fine.” You can watch it for yourself below. The game’s been commissioned by Netflix, with the series writers involved in creating it. Ever fancied becoming the bad guy? Well, a new Stranger Things VR game that mixes psychological horror with action is coming from creative studio Tender Claws in 2023, and it casts you as telekinetic monstrosity Vecna.
